Blassreiter

Last Updated: Sep 22, 2011

9.00 (very good) I saw art for this show and thought it would be good, though it did take me awhile to decide to watch it. I thought the show was pretty good, though in the beginning I thought I wouldn't really like this show because I thought it would be about those bikes too much. But after the first arc, it wasn't as centered around those bikes as much as you would think, that fact made me happy. Blassreiter turned out to be pretty good. The opening by Granrodeo I thought sounded good, and it seems like my personal theory is right. A bunch of anime series that are underestimated, or not very well known/watched seem to use Granrodeo. It's a pity really because most of those shows turn out to be really good once you give them a chance. I liked Joesph, his hair and jacket I thought looked nice. I also liked the color of his eyes. Amanda was an okay character though sometimes I thought her priorities were a bit messed up moreso in balancing her job and her little brother. Hermann, *Sigh* well he completely annoyed me with his intense obsession with his "friend" Gerd. I don't mind someone trying to save another person that's close to them, it's just that Hermann took it way too far. His hatred of Joesph was also completely unfounded. He was just a man who was too blinded by what he wanted and wanted to believe to listen to reason. Wolf I knew was shady the minute I saw him. I felt bad for all the XAT members that died, except for Wolf because he betrayed all his friends and comrades with no regard. I also couldn't stand Beatrice from the start, and it's not because she turned people into Demoniacs, it was because she was a b****, and a slut at that, just so things go the way she wanted but ironically after all that she still got screwed. She got what she deserved. Even though her life before Zargin was a bit sad. It seemed a lot of characters in the show were screwed over in a really bad way by their fellow man, so while I did feel bad for her, everything she did over the course of the show made it very difficult for me to sympathize with Beatrice's character and I disliked her to the very end. In the end, ignore the bikes and give this show a shot.

3.00 (poor) I like the OP and the battles should be good. I'm just worried about how the series will turn out overall though. Because it seems like their making the anime for fans/players of the games and not taking time to explain the characters themselves, their backgrounds (with the exception of Ragna's, which they only kinda threw a couple of hints) or what's going on and why.

9.00 (very good) All around pretty awesome. Reading the manga as well. Up to where the anime has reached in the manga it has stayed faithful to the source material. Right where Ch. 30 ends is where episode 10 of the anime ends as well. And from the looks of it, things are about to get a lot more serious. So I really hope that once the manga gets further along they'll make a second season^^

9.00 (very good) It was a pretty good vampire anime, also with a decent number of episodes in my opinion. Saya kind of annoyed me in the first half of the show because of how in denial she was about what she was, and how resistant she was in accepting how such was in the past and in the present. Granted at first it makes sense to be the way, because you don't really understand what's going on, but if you want to protect those close to you so that they don't end up hurt, dead, or turn into new Chiropterans, the exact things you're fighting against, you kinda have to accept it and do your all you can to make sure that the worse doesn't happen. I liked the clothes Saya had after she left on her own with Hagi for a year. I also very much preferred her attitude after she returned from her year away from everyone because even though she was cold, she was also way more focused on what had to be done. I also liked Hagi, the mostly quiet and very devoted protector. His wings looked very cool, it was just a pity that he only used them at the end of the series. I also wonder what will be done if anything about the series as far as a sequel is concerned since Saya's remaining family has the twins, the new queens of the Chiropterans. At the same time, the show was slow paced at certain points.

BLOOD-C

Last Updated: Mar 27, 2012

6.00 (average) One of the new anime I have been waiting on, though I think the pacing for the first episode could've have been a bit faster but either way I thought it was good. I like Saya. The pacing is a bit slow, I'm happy to see it getting to the plot. When I saw Shinichirou rush up the stairs and get killed by the female Elder Bairn in a matter of seconds, I was left thinking, “Wow, really? Him too?” I more or less stopped caring about everything that happened afterward, because it really felt like the support cast was only here to be killed off for some easy shock value. After seeing just about everyone die one after another in the past four episodes, I’ve become completely desensitized to it all. When he showed up out of nowhere just to die, I almost lost it in complete disbelief. Because even if it turns out that all of Saya’s friends are actually Elder Bairns (or were reborn as them at least), their deaths still come off as a very cheap plot device to build suspense. I wouldn’t say Blood-C is on the verge of driving me insane, but it sure does wear on me when it keeps beating around the bush with the same stuff over and over again. Even now, they haven’t completely spelled out how the coffee and guimauve that Fumito has been feeding Saya is soaked in blood. All the rhetorical questions the dog poses don’t help either, except maybe the idea that he was asked by Saya’s original self, who wanted someone to make sure that this so-called “experiment” is being carried out properly since she’ll have no memory of it. In connection, this is first time that it’s been revealed that Saya did receive blood transfusions of some kind, and that we’re given a better glimpse of the Saya before her. If anything was truly a surprise, it would be that Kanako might actually be on Saya’s side, given how she slowly helped her realize that everything’s she’s been led to believe is a lie. I’m not expecting anything from this series anymore. I wouldn’t go as far as calling Blood-C a complete joke though, as the story clearly had this U.S. military/Japanese government conspiracy in mind to begin with. The problem lied in the execution. When the time came to pull the covers off this town-wide charade, there was such a sour taste in my mouth from all the “deaths” that it completely lost its intended effect. The idea that Saya is an Elder Bairn in the form of a beautiful girl also works for me, because it confirms my suspicions that Fumito is interested in harnessing her powers for his own gain. At the same time, it takes that idea a step further by suggesting he’s taking her blood and experimenting with it to create a super soldier, as seen in the flashbacks where his men looked far from human. I presume the “contract” or “covenant” that the other Elder Bairns have been referring to is some sort of agreement between their monster-like kind to not attack one another. Saya was accused of being more repulsive than them, likely because she eats other Elder Bairns — a form of cannibalism if you will. All in all, these were climax-worthy revelations, so it’s just too bad that the series stumbled along the way to get to this point.

6.00 (average) The character design is nice. I really enjoy the voice acting & think it suits the characters. The OP & ED are nice. I enjoyed the series up until episodes 11 & 12. Both were rushed & left out a good bit of details that would've made a much more satisfying ending. Overall though, the series is enjoyable as long as you the keep the details about that last 2 episodes in mind.

8.00 (good) I like the character designs. I also like Kodaka. He managed to make the worst impression possible. Not only was he late on his first day transferring into Saint Chronica Academy but he has blonde hair, "assaulted" a teacher (in reality all he really did was run to class, end up out of breath, and stumbled into class; freaking the teacher out) and even "extorted" a textbook from his classmate (again all he did was ask to borrow one and beause of the girl judging Kodoka on his appearance and because of what happened with the teacher, she just gave him her book out of "fear".) While most of that was blown out of proportion, it still doesn’t change the fact that he’s friendless because of things out of his control. This makes the perfect setup for Mikazuki Yozora to sweep right in. I love how she goes around and appears to be this selfish little girl even though she can’t hide the fact that she has a big heart. I’m willing to bet that throughout the series she’ll slowly reveal what occurred in her past. But until then, I’m excited to watch her battle with Kashiwazakai Sena, the perfect girl who’s perfection scares off everyone around her (except her stalkers). With half the full cast still missing, I can’t wait to see what kind of strange things are preventing them from making friends. It was nice to see the ending, that childhood friends found each other again after 10 years. Now watching the second season.

9.00 (very good) A series about a video game turned into a real life survival game and it's made by Madhouse. Love the OP No pain, No game by nano^^ I'd be pretty freaked out too if I suddenly woke up and found myself in the middle of a giant forest with equally big bugs all over the place without knowing how I got there. So I don't blame Ryota there. Though Ryouta was a bit of a prick to his mom, but it was messed up that she just volunteered him for the real life version of BTOOOM. It ended happily though, so that's a plus given the circumstances.

8.75 (very good) Decided to watch because seemed a bit different and like the show could turn out good. The idea behind the plot is different and therefore interesting in its own way, it's concept on money and the economy intrigued me, as well as having to use your future as collateral. The opening was good in my opinion. I thought the show was good, though I did think it was going to be longer than what it turned out to be. I liked how the characters looked. What happened to Takako was pretty messed up/sad. I liked Msyu and the fact that she used fire as well as the battles and Q. Masakaki always struck me as a weird or maybe creepy kinda character is a simplier way to explain him in my mind. From the beginning I always figured Masakaki was a strange one. But weird enough I kinda liked him as well. What Mikuni did I completely saw coming. I didn't think Q's ability would be what it turned out to be, and I wished she got a chance to fight more. The final battle between Mikuni and Kimmimaro I thought was pretty good. I liked the fight between Q and Msyu way more. I thought the kiss between Kimmimaro and Msyu was cute^^ I figured it would end the way it did and I liked it. All and all, C is a good show.

5.75 (average) Genetically altered girls sent in to investigate a post-apocalyptic world. Definitely had the potential to be really good. I like the OP and ED. The first four episodes it seems are just to give you the feel for the how truly isolated and messed up the area is that the girls are investigating, but unfortunately they kinda taper off into focusing on the cliche of two misguided Coppelion to carry the rest of the series. Which fell flat for me and was a boring use of a last arc.

8.00 (good) I liked the use of vampires. It was a pretty good horror/supernatural anime in my opinion. Though the ending was slightly open-ended and I would've liked to know more about what happened to Sunako and Seishin. Also what Toshio Ozaki did to Kyoko, his own wife, when she became a Shiki all to find out more about them and what could be done to hurt or kill the Shiki disturbed me. I also really enjoyed Seishirou Kirishiki's character since I know his VA was Gackt. If you like horror anime you should definitely give Shiki a try.

7.50 (good) Funny and silly, some of the plot and the character designs reminds me of Kimi to Boku. When Tadakuni got caught wearing his sister's clothes I was laughing so hard. The boy meets girl ending in the first episode with Yoshitake was funny.^^ Even sadder/funnier that the girl actually went out trying to find a boy to set up the situation she wanted to experience; even worse unknowingly he played right into it. Seeing all the silly/stupid things the boys get into is halarious. There's also a group of three girls from East High who also do a lot of the same things as the boys. That makes the series even funnier because you can see things play out from both sides and not just the boys. You can certainly tell the director from Gintama is also working on this because the humor is very similar.

Dantalian no Shoka

Last Updated: Sep 22, 2012

7.00 (above average) Started watching this because it seems like it will be a good mystery anime, and I do enjoy a good mystery.^^ The charcter design seems good so far, even though some of the the colors are a bit dark. I like the opening, it's quiet and nice. I think Flamberg is pretty as well as Dalian. Episodic anime is a tricky proposition. In the absence of an overriding plot, character development can sometimes be difficult, and making the audience feel truly involved is more difficult. Some series like Natsume Yuujinchou overcome this by making their episodic tales heart-warming and relatable. Emotionally cooler shows, like Mushishi, do so by the sheer brilliance of the writing and the magnetism of the lead. Dantlian no Shoka, lacking either of those qualities, has settled into a kind of detached purgatory – usually enjoyable but rarely memorable. I like the characters here, especially Huey, who clearly has hidden depths we haven’t seen. He carries a lot of pain with him and he’s seen some terrible things. The problem is, we haven’t seen those depths – bar some brief flashbacks with the lilac-haired Yomihime. I like this series, but I’d really love to love it. It has style, it’s extremely smart and literate, the OP is beyond beautiful and it offers an engaging premise. But Dantalian no Shoka – at least the anime version – is a tease. It only lets you see so much of what it is, occasionally (such as last week’s bookworm classic) shows you brilliance, but always pulls away before you can get too close. With two episodes to go there are some tiny hints that we may finally get inside Huey’s pain – the flashback occurred in the postscript this week, and we appear to be getting an appearance from a regular character in the novels – Raisel, the Red Yomihime that was responsible for the shenanigans in the bombed-out village in episode six. Perhaps, just perhaps, Dantalian is going to start bringing it all together and start showing us what’s really happening in Huey’s head. It was nice to finally see Huey's past. Looking back, I can’t help but feel I’ve just watched a pretty, well-produced 12-episode teaser trailer for the light novels, even so I’d call the series successful in that it gave us an interesting story, some extremely literate writing, and a memorable visual style. It still goes down as a lost opportunity for me, though, because it never grew beyond the impression that it was only letting you see the tip of the iceberg, and jealously guarding most of its secrets. As is, I’ll remember it as a solid show, and for what it might have been as much as for what it was.
