Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou

Last Updated: Sep 30, 2013

2.00 (very poor) The pacing and development of the story is pathetic. After a good first episode and a decent-ish first arc; since it did have to establish the characters and has to be fleshed out on some level, this show seriously slid downhill, and I've largely given up defending it. It had potential, but it didn't come through, and every episode is increasingly cliche like it came out of a scriptwriters handbook on how to do things that have no spark or interest or desire to do something grand; that or just plain stupid. And to top it all off, Akari, the MC is a complete brain dead idiot. This show has completely crapped out and has given me nothing except plenty of lessons in how series should not be done. Which is nice in its own way, I suppose. The only thing this show had going for it was that the opening was made by Lisa and sounds good. Taiyou is nothing more than a series that had potential in the beginning but just ended up completely ruining something that could have been good.

9.00 (very good) I wanted to have a new anime to pick up, preferrably a funny one and after a few suggestions and seeing in how acclaimed this was, decided to pick it up. Never read the source material. A pretty unique anime given that it's about farming. Hachiken is very funny. ^^ Hilarious so far and the character development is really good. :) The calf chewing on Hachiken's pants was so cute ^^

8.75 (very good) Started looking for another series to pick up that I could watch and decided on this. Seeing as I don't mind the mecha genre; they can be quite enjoyable for me when done right, and I decided to give this a shot. The 1st OP sounds pretty good and for whatever reason I prefer it more over the 2nd. The mechs look really nice. The plot starts to kick in at Ep. 7, and it's been worth the wait. The character interactions do well on both levels of seriousness and comedy. Tamaki is so funny to watch, she's the bubbly hyperactive one. The mech battles look really awesome as well. Jiart is truly obsessed. Izuru's mech in its ultimate form looked pretty cool. Pity we never found out if Ange was truly a guy or girl. But the final fight between Izuru and Jiart was pretty awesome. Can't tell what the little bit at the end was supposed to tell us though; as far as whether Izuru was alive or if basically ended up having his last breaths & dying inside his mech, it was kinda cryptic. All in all, a slow start, but nice comedy, character development and awesome action. A nice little series to get into if you're looking for a mecha series with all those aforementioned points ^^

10.00 (excellent) Hilarious! Definitely one of my faves. Gintoki is awesome. Kagura is so funny, she's like a mini Gintoki and Shinpachi's funny when he gets ticked off. I like Kamui too. Sougo and Hijikata are also pretty funny characters. I also like the fights in this series. I would like to see more of Takasugi. Umibozu is also pretty funny & badass. The series has just an awesome way of combining seriousness, drama and just straight up hilarity. And while it is a comedy show at heart, Gintama has a really nice way of making all of its characters matter.

Greatness returned with the 2015 season \o/
And the greatness returns yet again in 2017 \o/

4.50 (moderate) A romantic comedy. Seems like it's a genre of anime J.C Staff is better at handling among all the others. I thought it was funny how Banri and Mitsuo met, both because they were lost and decided to follow a pair of girls who knew where they were going, at least more than the boys did anyway xD And Kouko's just suddenly appearing was so out of nowhere, but very funny. And hearing Mitsuo describe Kouko was hilarious, even more so when all that time she was sitting right behind them. xD Chinami is very perky and friendly. The ED sounds good.

Though I have to say, this series let me down, but it was only in one aspect: our main characters.
Comedy was good, even with Banri. But it felt like the side characters ended up more likeable by the end of the series. Something about Banri's complete "I'm gonna roll over and do whatever she wants because my gf is pushy, but I won't admit that, I'll just say its part of her charm." was painful to watch because there was at least one other option for him in terms of a relationship, if J.C. Staff decided to go down that route. Koko: By the end of the series she never really changed. The only thing that did was that she was able to stop acting like such a bitch to Chinami. But for more of the series she flipped between, looking down on other characters (the beginning), clingy and overly sweet, then she'd turn it all and go well this is apparently too heavy for you so I'm cutting this off, ALL the while crying/feeling bad secretly and feeling wanting "pity", then denying it all together, slapping on that smile and bubbly attitude (all while having an undertone of snotty.) Always flipping attitudes seemingly at a moments notice. 1 minutes she's this, the next minute she's that, all the while never noticing how much her supposed "boyfriend" is going through and not making too big of an attempt to help. Linda and Nana were more of a help to Banri than she was and their NOT dating him. Sad because by the end of it I found myself wishing they had never gotten back together.

9.75 (excellent) I like the interactions between Victorique and Kazuya Kujo. Even though Victorique can act childlike at times. Including her fondness of sweets and being inwardly jealous when Kazuya spends a lot of time with Avril. Avril is a character I saw coming, since she is there as a rival for Victorique. Even so, I don't really care too much for Avril at all. I enjoy Brian Roscoe a.k.a Leviathan, though I was quite confused when I saw that there were two of them, moreso that they were twins and I did guess that one of the twins would have an somewhat too deep of an attachment to Cordelia due to circumstances early in their life. The Alchemy aspect mae things very interesting. I also really love the ending themes Resuscitated Hope and Unity^^ The battle between Cordelia and the Marquis was pretty good. I didn't expect it. It also made me sad that Cordelia died. Though the Marquis was a really twisted character, didn't like him at all. I thought the ending was so cute^^ I liked that Kujo made it back to Victorique, proving that he stuck to his vow of not allowing them to be separated. Though I didn't think Victorique's hair would turn silver. I thought this was an interesting series that had some cute and funny moments.

GUILTY CROWN

Last Updated: Sep 29, 2012

4.00 (below average) This was another one of the new series that I was really excited to see. I like the character designs. Guilty Crown feels like and reminds me a lot of Code Geass in many ways, the story itself is pretty similiar — right down to the main protagonist with the Power of Kings, the resistance group trying to liberate Japan, and the prevalent use of mechs. The characters are all incredibly interesting at first, but soon enough you’re looking for more growth from them as the plot progresses and you just…don’t get it. Shu, as the reluctant hero, is unsure of what’s going on around him at first. However, as he gets further and further into the mystery surrounding his family, himself and the virus, he doesn’t seem to develop in a way that I hoped he would. One episode he’s incredibly unsure of himself and then the next he’s so focused on what’s going on around him and determined to accomplish whatever his objective is that he just turns into a cold, cruel, uncaring prick. Just when you think that he’s finally come to terms with his powers and what's going on in his life to change for the better, he goes back to being a weak-willed teenager completely unsure of what he wants.

On some level, I could understand why this happens – I'm pretty sure that anyone in Shu’s situation would be unsure of themselves from time to time – but after he basically vows to become King of Tokyo and remove GHQ from their position of power, he only ends up putting on a cold mask in front of others but is still the wavering, indecisive Shu that we’ve see throughout the series, so nothing actually changes in terms of his character.

In contrast to Shu’s up and down development as a character, Inori doesn’t seem to develop much at all. Throughout most of the series she’s the same complacent, unemotional character that goes along with whatever Shu wanted to do; regardless of whether those things were right or wrong. It’s only when I learn the truth behind Inori’s and why she’s alive to begin with does she finally show some more emotion and a bit of development. One thing is certain though; her dedication and love for Shu were the only things that remained constant. The rest of the cast didn't develop very much, but considering they didn’t have a huge role in the overall plot, that was somewhat expected.

Poor character development aside, the plot was fairly decent but it was confusing and too rushed at times, and didn't live up to expectation, the animation was gorgeous and the soundtrack was nice to listen to.

Hagure Yuusha no Estetica

Last Updated: Oct 01, 2012

4.75 (moderate) The characters look good but the series has way too much unnecessary ecchi. It was nice to see a strong lead character instead of a weak one, it's a change of pace. The action, magic, and kick ass protagonist screamed potential for me, even with the fanservice element. Ultimately, Estetica will go down as one of those series that just missed the mark (and by a fair bit). It seems like part of this is at least due to the fact it’s an adaptation, but I have heard it is at least fairly close to the original source material. I have also heard that the future chapters are a far cry better than what has been shown up to this point, but I just don’t see myself wanting to continue the source material to see. There is a chance I will however… just not at this point in time. At least though, the fanservice elements seem to be here for those that want them, but just those elements won’t do (at least for me) when surrounded by a plot that failed to deliver and reach its potential. And well, that’s about it I suppose. Sadly, the series just didn’t end up the way I expected.

8.75 (very good) The character design is really pretty. The music was nice. While the pacing was slow, it worked for this series, because it allowed time for the characters to develop in a natural kind of way. Last Updated: Oct 28, 2016

9.00 (very good) It's a slice-of-life series which is a genre I don't watch too often. After seeing art and PV's for the show, I thought I would give this show a shot and see how I like it because it seems like it could turn out to be interesting. I actually think the anime itself is very nice looking; the characters designs are quite pretty. I liked the grandmother, but until the third episode she's come off very cold-hearted, but it was amazing to hear her words of encouragement to Jiroumaru but listening to her acknowledge Ohana was just amazing. The differnet attitudes of the characters are nice. Ohana reminds me a lot of myself. Jiro is a complete fool, in a funny way. It was also nice to be able to see a bit of Nako's home life, I'm sure it must be difficult for her, since she's working, going to school, and then having to come home and cook dinner and take care of her three siblings. I know it must be overwhelming to balance all those things and still try to find time for herself, being able to do all that is quite admirable. It's also nice to see Nako speak up a bit more and become more outgoing. Tomoe cracks me up with the things she says and does sometimes. Minchi has a good attitude but she let's her anger over Ohana and Tōru's relationship turn her into a bit of an unlikeable character sometimes, even though her reason is because she likes Tōru as well so she feels like Ohana is stealing him away from her. It was really nice to see that Ko and Ohana confessed their feelings for each other. The ending was bittersweet. This is a show focused on self-discovery. And the hardest thing in the world is probably trying to figure out just what and who you are. The one thing I’m taking away from this show is that even though life is generally crappy and will deal you some pretty crappy cards, it shouldn’t stop you from living it up while you figure out just who you are. With a great cast, and a great team behind it, I think anyone can enjoy this show, I recommend it for anyone to watch and I think anyone can enjoy it; I certainly did.

Also watched the move: Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home.

Decided to watch this since it's similar to K-On, a series I really enjoyed & because it has a 2nd season coming up & thought why not. So far Kumiko & Asuka are my fav characters in the series. ^^ Taki is hella strict... Yuuko is so damn SELFISH over something that has to do with her senpai Kaori & not herself. I can't stand her character at all.

Kumiko & Reina character develpment got shafted; even taking Reina out of a decent portion of the second season just to have her come back into things & have Kumiko blindly supporting pointless a relationship in Reina & Taki was so unneeded.

6.00 (average) I'm watching this because I saw it on a blog that I use for anime and the plot seems really interesting. I just finished watching the first episode and Aria's attitude is very funny, I also thought it was funny when she showed up at his house with a suitcase saying: be my slave. What a thing to say to some one when you just show up, barge into thier house and make yourself at home. Watching Aria gets flustered so much over Kinji was cute. Shirayuki was just a completely annoying character to me. Though she was an expected character type; the childhood friend with feelings for the main male character, Kinji. The girl's feelings towards Kinji can't even be called jealousy. Shirayuki acts like a stalker, seeing as she tried to murder Aria when Shirayuki found out she was living with Kinji. I didn't like her. I liked Reki, I wished they showed her more. Riko was okay. Her past with Vlad was pretty mesed up. I didn't expect Sayonaki to be the vesel for the bad guy, even though there were moments when he acted suspcious, so I did know he wouldn't turn out to be a good guy.

Last Updated: Dec 24, 2012

3.00 (poor) I was surprised to see this being made as an anime. The first episode does a pretty good job of introducing the characters and the plot basis. Plot-wise, the premise is pretty straight-forward, and I assume since this was adapted from an otome game, the show will be more romance-oriented. But I recall that Hakuouki was pretty plot-heavy and drier on romance, so I could be wrong. It’s a pretty dangerous move taking Hiiro no Kakera in a plot-oriented direction though because that could potentially expose a lot of weaknesses in the show; not saying otome games have no plot, but their plots aren’t necessarily…the most complicated things in the world. The atmosphere is another wild card, as from this episode, it seems like Studio DEEN is going for an eerie vibe. I’m not sure how that’s going to blend with the lighter moments in the series. Animation held its own, which is pretty commendable since Kazuki Yone’s art is pretty hard to top. While I find the game’s art to be more appealing, it’s definitely unfair to be comparing it against the show’s animation since the source material contains a lot of minute details that the animators can’t copy. That said, the characters at least resemble their game counterparts, and Studio DEEN even managed to replicate some of the opening CG’s.

7.75 (good) Manga gets an 8.

I was excited to see this getting an anime season. The story pacing is all over the place. The anime choosing to cut out at least 4 major scenes and that's just if you base it on the FIRST chapter. Explanations and conversations completely left out that actually mattered to the plot and our main characters. Then to make it worse they advanced the plot too fast, introducing things so quickly (that didn't happen so soon in the manga) that the storytelling aspect feels extremely broken for the first handful of episodes.

But after that horrible arc it picked itself up and ramped it up to high gear IMHO. And thankfully that broken pacing didn't hang around either. Toru and Chaika are cute. So all in all after a week first arc this series shaped up to be a pretty decent one.

But after starting the 2011 series I can honestly say this series is a lot darker than it's character design would have you believe. I like Hanzo, Gon and Killua. I like Hisoka as well (though I think he dresses a bit strange and his attitude when he fighting someone strong can be a bit...odd to say the least.) But I respect his fighting ability. Leorio annoys me. Kurapika is cool when fighting, but he would readily drop his friends if the Phantom Troupe were to be involved; which is pretty messed up. Dammit those feels during Meruem and Komugi's final moments...it's been awhile since an anime has made me emotional, but that, that hit me... My hat is off to both Togashi & Madhouse. 8.00 (good) The animation reminds me of Gosick. To most viewers, this will undoubtedly be the slowest and most uneventful new series of the season, and be quickly written off as as “boring” or “dull”, but I looked forward to this series, featuring a heartwarming 19th century story about a young Japanese girl named Yune, who travels to Paris, France to work. I’ll be quick to admit that I absolutely adore Yune. From her strict adherence to Japanese customs and her earnest desire to be helpful to Claude Claudel, owner of the Enseignes du Roy ironworks shop, I don’t see how anyone could not fall in love with her. The simplicity of the series and how it makes me appreciate the little things in life more are a large part of it, much like it was in the Aria series. It’s hard to imagine that anyone could get upset with Yune when she tries so hard to be helpful, and while Claude didn’t really get mad at her, he did inadvertently make her feel like her Japanese sense of hospitality is a bad thing. She was like an innocent girl thrown into a labyrinth full of Parisian “wolves” and told to suspect everyone before trusting them. It’s always a shame to see a kindhearted person’s outlook on the world suddenly shattered by the harsh reality of it all. Instead of being told that they’re good Samaritans, they’re told that they’re naive and will be taken advantage of. For most people, it usually only takes one incident for them to lose faith in the kindness of strangers too, before sending them down a spiral of distrust. In Yune’s case, her innocence was clearly shaken after the homeless boy stole a candle holder, but luckily not completely lost thanks to the reassurance Claude gave her. He could have easily been upset with her and questioned about exactly which piece was stolen. I don’t think Yune would’ve minded either, since she was more concerned about the candle holder than her own well-being too. Because of that, it was awfully sweet for Claude to be worried about Yune more than anything else, and didn’t make her feel any worse than she already did on top of being afraid of all the strangers whom she couldn’t talk to while she was lost. I felt really bad watching her wander around town, freaked out by all the strangers she couldn't trust or speak to in order to get help. I really liked the sentimental moment in that scene and was happy to see Yune felt better at the very end. She’s clearly not the type of person to forget about a mistake like this, so the last thing that she needed was to be reminded of it. It also made a point of how children as well-mannered as Yune should be showered in affection and not cornered with blame. When you get older, you can really appreciate why people love well-behaved kids. It’s not that I want to see the characters go through hardships; it’s just that I want to see them grow closer because of them. Oscar always tends to bring everything in perspective for us as well, so it’s always nice to hear his grandfather-like input on any situation, whether he’s fully aware of what happened or not. I'm unsure about Camille. Alice treats Yune like a doll. I liked how Claude and Yune get to understad eachother over the course of the series. Claude treats Yune like an older brother and Oscar is just the kind and silly at times grandfather. It was really nice to see how much Claude cared for Yune as equally as nice to see him open up and talk about his father. The ending was sweet because Yune had become a part of the Galerie's family and everyone cared for her. The series was very nice.

7.25 (above average) The plot was a bit predictable because of the whole harem situation. Though the cold opening and the fight at the end were especially awesome! Watching the second season. The second season tried to get somewhere and it felt really unsatisfying. If they focused more on integrating Phantom Task into this season it would've turned out a lot better in my opinion. Take Ichika out of a situation and it would amaze you how much more capable and bad ass the girls acted. But throw him back in and they would just revert back to damsels in distress waiting for him to become the hero.

Kinda weird/sad how only Houki was relieved that Ichika had not died. Though, at least to me, Houki has lost her #1 spot in the harem to Tatenashi. Because while Houki's only flaw was that she was too predictable when she dealt with Ichika when she became embarrassed/angry about something whenever he happened to be nearby, almost every girl had that flaw. And that got old, fast. But throughout the two seasons things were focused a good bit more on Houki that the other girls. But Tatenashi never had those type of tendencies so while I like Houki and find Laura funny and adorable at times, with this new season Tatenashi won me over.

It gets downgraded because they focused a bit too much on transforming its strong female characters into shrill, catty yanderes who apparently thought they could get Ichika’s love through violence. Which doesn't work, by the way. Instead of focusing on what should have been the main points: Phantom Task and Tabane.
